The Chipmunk Program for 3-6 year olds, the Red Squirrel Program for children 7-12 old, and the Otter Program for 10-12 year olds make it possible for the whole family to attend the Art of Mentoring. Children spend the week exploring the natural world with the guidance of a regional network of instructors. The programs includes sensory awareness games and exercises, earth living skills, native scout skills, arts and crafts, music and storytelling, and getting to know the natural world through “native eyes.” Children learn these skills and knowledge through artful mentoring that taps into their passions and interests.
The format of the Chipmunk & Red Squirrel Programs is similar to a day camp running from Wednesday AM through Sunday AM (Tuesday the children are fully incorporated in community events with their parents). The children’s program makes it possible for parents to participate in most workshop activities. However, there are some limitations you need to be aware of. Parents must supervise their children at all meal times as well as during the early evening and bedtime. For this reason, at least one parent will not be able to participate when evening workshop sessions are scheduled. There is an option to bring a designated caregiver for your child. Please contact the office for more information.
The format of the Otter Program is an overnight camp. This program is designed for youth who have experience in the woods but are not yet old enough for the Teen Rendezvous. They will get a taste and a good foundation for future participation in the Teen Rendezvous. The Otters go out on Wednesday morning and return mid-day Saturday.
Adult Caregivers are welcome to come with the younger children with the understanding that their focus is care of the child(ren) and supporting the parent attending one of the adult workshop. Caregivers should not have an expectation to participate in the adult workshops. That said, scattered throughout the week are events inclusive of everyone present, young and old. The fee covers housing and meals.
